What constitute a successful chip? The simple answer is when the chip falls into the cup. -That however won't always be the case so getting it close almost every time should be focus of chipping the ball. Successful chipping involves carry the ball a short distance over uneven terrain and landing the ball just on the green to roll out like a putt and to stop near the hole.
The goal of any chip shot whether it be the chip and run or just a chip shot with some spin on it is first to get the ball into the hole. If the ball misses, an acceptable chip is one that leaves a one-putt. The measure of a successful is one that comes to rest within 3 feet of the hole. Within 3 feet, your putter should be able to hole the next shot.
If you are having trouble consistently chipping the ball to within 3 feet of the hole, practice chipping with an 8-iron from various distances. Develop a feel for how the ball releases towards the hole after landing. Focus on a tight landing area. Visualize a small 1 foot circle on the green as the landing area and concentrate on making sure that the chipped shots land within that circle and then release. From different distances, you will need to adjust the landing area closer or further away from the pin in order to consistently chip within 3 feet of the pin.
