Adding some check spin to your chips is easy and only requires one minor adjustment through impact to slow the golf ball down. Adding a little more backspin to a chip is especially useful when chipping downhill.
Try this: Make your normal chipping stroke through the ball, hitting down and making crisp contact of course BUT during impact, keep the clubface open. That is, do not allow the clubface to turnover.
On the the through swing and finish, the clubface should remain open and point straight up in the air while holding the finish.
To do this, feel your trailing hand (right hand for right-handed players) work underneath the club shaft through impact. The right palm should never rotate to the left.
This method adds extra backspin to the ball because the ball has more time to roll up the face of the club which is how backspin is created.
