The basic pitch is nothing more than a mini version of the full swing with a couple of subtle differences than normal.
To hit effective and consistent pitch shots, setup by positioning the ball in the middle of the stance. The feet should be narrow or shoulder width apart. The majority of the weight should be on the balls of the front foot. The body should be slightly open and in turn the clubface should be slightly open.
The backswing and through swing should be equidistant to ensure consistency.
To begin the swing, move the club away from the ball using the arms and shoulders in unison. Swing up steeply in the backswing. On the downswing, turn the shoulders and allow the arms and club to drop from the inside and turn through the shot.
The swing should never be greater than 9 o'clock either in the backswing or forward swing. The basic pitch shot should be a low power drive into the ball with minimal hand action. Let the arms and hands follow the momentum of the shoulders rotating through the ball to hit the ball into the air.
Maintain the spine angle through the shot. If the spine angle is lost (up or down) the shot will be hit fat or thin depending how the angle is lost. Focus on maintaining a steady chin to keep the angle intact throughout the swing in order to make consistent ball contact and send the pitch along its way on a way trajectory.
