What is a Chip Shot?

A chip shot is a low powered, low flying shot played just off the green from a variety of lies. The chip is usually played no more than 30 yards of the green.

The chip and run, as it is also known by, features a ball flight that carries a short distance in the air, lands on the putting surface and then rolls (run) towards the hole like a putt.

The chip can be played using a variety of clubs. Anything from a 3-iron to a lob wedge can produce a short shot that just carries onto the green and then rolls out towards the hole. Choosing the correct club is a matter of judging how far the ball needs to carry onto the green and then how far it needs to run out.

Learning to hit effective chips can save par and even produce birdies.
