When faced with the situation of a ball laying deep in heavy rough the only option is to chop it out to get it back into play.

To play the chop shot, take a higher lofted club and set up with the ball back and with the body and clubface open. Make a very upright swing by lifting the club directly over the ball. Drop the club down onto the ball in the downswing to pop it out of the deep rough.

Accelerate through the downswing to ensure that enough force is delivered into the ball to advance it from its position.

Swing hard. The rough (deep grass) will fight the swing and impede solid contact. Expect the ball to only fly a short distance but hopefully back onto the fairway for the next shot.
